History Underground - Artifacts & Anecdotes from Sauk County

Date: June 2, 2026 Time: 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Event Description
In November of 1913, while hauling gravel from the Baraboo River in Lyons, now West Baraboo, a wooly mammoth tooth was discovered by August Platt and others. In 1905, a 62- pound round quartzite stone with an eye-bolt was found by William Dennis of Merrimac, while digging a cellar for his house.

These finds, and the stories they inspire, shape the history of Sauk County and how we interact with our past. How did these items get there? What do they tell us about the area?

Join Sauk County Historical Society Curator, Sara Oostdik, as she explores some of the buried discoveries in Sauk County, in her upcoming presentation “History Underground - Artifacts and Anecdotes from Sauk County”, June 2nd at 6 pm at the Carnegie-Schadde Memorial Public Library in Baraboo.
